Deeds, maps, accounts and correspondence documenting the acquisition, speculation in, and sale of lands in the Connecticut Western Reserve by the Hart and Jarvis families of Saybrook and Hartford, Conn. Papers include proprietors' records of the towns of Hartsgrove, Wrightsburg, (i.e. Saybrook) and Sheffield, Ohio. Persons extensively represented include William Hart and Richard W. Hart of Saybrook, Conn., Hetty B. Hart of Hartford, Conn., William and Elizabeth Jarvis of Chatham, Conn., and their agents Sumner Bull and Isaac Mills in the Reserve. Includes field notes of surveyors J.R. and Almon Hawley and letters from James H. Causten about French spoilation claims.

Rev. William Jarvis was an Episcopalian clergyman in East Haddam, Hebron, and Chatham. He retired from the ministry after a severe illness. He lived in Portland until 1852 and then moved to Middletown until after the marriage of his daughter, Elizabeth Hart Jarvis to Col. Samuel Colt of Hartford. At that point he and his wife, Elizabeth (Hart) Jarvis moved to Hartford. They first lived in the United States Hotel and later with their daughter at Armsmear.
